Since it sounds like you haven't, there are also other good reasons to consult your local building commission. Do a search for "deck collapse" to see why you need to cover your butt with proper permits and inspections. The permitting fees are pocket change compared to what you might incur should the unthinkable happen, and you'd have already given your insurance company an easy out.
