correction, again Posted by BrentHigbee on August 1st, 2005 11:01 AM In reply to correction by BrentHigbee on August 1st, 2005 10:45 AM [Go to top of thread]
I should read my posts before hitting the 'post reply' button. Here's the list again, with corrections:
1) Spray all with Round-Up or equivalent weed killer.
2) Let it sit for a week. This gives time for weed killer to soak all the way into the weeds (brambles), and the remaining weed remnants (roots, stubble) left in the soil will continue to die.
3) cut and haul away the weeds. This keeps them from clogging up the roto-tiller (rotivator). Depending on the type of weeds, this may involve a string trimmer, pruning shears, or a chain saw. You need to break up the content enough and haul away the long pieces so they don't clog up the machine in the next step.
4) Use a roto-tiller to soften up the top 8" of soil
5) level out those 8" of loosened soil
6) repeat steps 4 and 5 as needed
7) Compact the soil. Walk on it, stomp on it, a lot.
8) Soak it. Needs to get over-saturated down to many inches. Turn it all to mud.
9) Let it dry for several days.
10) Repeat step 7
11) Rake it all smooth and level. If it's too hard (high clay content), you can rototill it lightly, then rake it smooth.
At this point you can follow normal grass seed planting process. Use a good mix of seed that they recommend for your area.
For sod you can skips steps 1 and 2, and planting grass. A lot more money, but about 6 weeks quicker. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
