You were getting fumes backing up from the septic tank. The drain in the shower is either lacking a trap, lacking a vent, or has a clogged vent.
Since the previous owner had a cover over the drain I would suspect it has been that way for some time.
In my opinion, this needs to be corrected prior to any closing on the house.
