Front door kicked in, who to fix frame/jamb?

What's the easiest way for a novice to repair a kicked in door frame?
Parts of the wood from the frame have been thrown out, the door is fine.
The trim is broken. I can replace that, but the frame (or is it called a jamb?) is broken with pieces missing.
Can I replace just that side, or just the broken section? It seems to be nailed from the top where I can't get to the nails, also the bottom threshold. .. where nails stick out from under the threshold. Staples, not nails.
Any tips would be most welcome. Thanks.
