kitchen cabinets

my kitchen cabinets are stained a very, very dark brown...i want to streak or brush them with the final result a white cabinet with the dark streaks barely showing through...can i just go over what i have with a white glaze and streak it with a dry brush or do i have to paint them dark brown or tan and then apply the white glaze...wouldn't the effect be the same in the long run?????
