Glazing cabinets

I'm looking at purchasing unfinished cabinets. I want to glaze the cabinets against the wall a darker glaze and the island a lighter. I want the the cabinets to look natural. Would it work to put glaze directly on the raw wood, or do I need to put a natural stain on before the glaze?
