OLD Chimney - SS or Solid liner?

Posted by klentenza on October 18th, 2005 05:49 PM

Our house was built around 1890 and chimney is in bad shape. We can see it in our attic, where the mortar around the red bricks is crumbling, and even a hole where we can see through to the back side of the flue.

I called a couple of places about liners. The solid flue seller says a stainless liner would be too heavy for such an old, deteriorated chimney to hold up and SS liner seller says a solid flue would be too heavy and may blow out the side of the chimney during installation from the pressure of being blown in.

Who do I believe? which is better? What is the price difference I can expect?

We have an oil boiler in the basement and a wood burning insert in the living room, so we need two. A 35-40 ft for the boiler and a 30-35 ft for the insert. Chimney originally contained 4 flues. The other two are not being used.

I appreciate any help from persons experienced in this area. Thanks Karen
