I have a 3/4" plywood subfloor installed over joists at 16" OC. I intend to install Hardibacker (thinset & screws) over the plywood and 13" x 13" porcelain tiles over that. Question is, what thickness of backer should I use, 1/4" or 1/2"? James Hardie Corp. recommends 1/4" for floors. I want to do all that is possible to prevent cracking. Will the 1/2" add any value or just make my transitions & door bottoms more difficult?
