Go to Home Depot. Rent a Hilti TE505 electric chipper with a 4 inch wide chisel tip for $40 a day. This is a monster device that resembles a jack hammer but will not destroy your concrete. It may destroy your hand, back, and hearing, so use a hearing protector and take breaks to vacuum up the dust and relax. It's a strenuous process, but it's the fastest and easiest way. We did a 9ft by 8ft area in about 6 hours of hard work. Start by holding it at about 30 degrees off the vertical and let the device shake the chisel against the thinset. This will break up big chunks. Do one pass that way. Then go back across it again, holding it at a slightly shallower angle and pressing down hard on the left-hand handle to make a smoother pass. Use your right leg to hold the machine steady. This will smoothe out the surface. Women, get a man to do this for you. The machine is heavy and hard to control.
