I have used this method and it works great. You must construct a rod that is very strong. or it will bend.
use black pipe with a threaded rod inside have your local machine shop make ends to screw on the threaded rod and mate with the grage door opener. it only cost me 20 bucks for the ends and 20 bucks for the rod and pipe.
