Are you aware if the top bricks of your chimney are falling apart. Usually the hight of the chimney is somehow proportional to the opening. The top of the chimney should be stepped in a little so to offset the wind while it is blowing across the the top (Cap). I have heard that the other solution is to raise the floor of the fireplace with firebricks. This will lessen the front area of the fireplace.
