Install butcherblock countetops?

I currently have formica countertops in my kitchen and I am very much interested in replacing them with wood. Is this an easy job for an average d.i.y. or should I get a professional in. If I elect to have a pro do the job should I call a carpenter or a countertop guy and how much does a job like this usually cost. (labor only, I would supply the countertop?) Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
