Plaster walls?

We are considering buying a wonderful old house. Built int he late '20s
It has beautiful woodwork but the walls are all horizontal wood. I don't
belive it would be possible to put drywall on over the wood walls without
removing the facings, etc. and I would not want to risk breaking some of that
beautiful old wood. The walls have had canvas and wallpaper but it is in bad
condition and will have to be replaced with something. Is it possible to plaster
over the wood walls? Or is there something we could do so that the walls could be
painted instead of wallpapered?
