removing a wall/purchasing and installing a kitchen island Posted by DrJag on July 4th, 2000 09:28 AM
I have a galley kitchen with an adjoining dining room, and a wall separates them. A contractor told me the wall was not load bearing and that I could remove the wall if I wanted to, or alternatively, cut a hole in the wall and put in a countertop. What I would like to do is remove the wall and put in an island, so the kitchen would have more storage, and the rooms would be larger. My questions are: Am I crazy to try and take the wall out by myself? Can I buy an island that just needs to be assembled and attached to the floor? I don't need any electricity or plumbing in the island, I just want it for counter space and storage. What should this job cost? Thanks for any advice you have!
