The cheapest, non-custom, do-it-yourself way is to buy base cabinets and let them form the island. Easy install, provides ready made storage, and you can have some doors double (opening into both kitchen & dining) for easy access, sort of a buffet on one side and functional work area on the other. Good luck, I'm in the starting stages of doing a complete galley kitchen with uder the counter everything.
