attic stairway

It already has a rigged, flip down, extension on it but it is unsafe.
I live in the country and am not worried about codes. Where do you find these codes applying to add in stairways ?
I am still seeking ideas on how to extend it.
If they can be manufactured, then they can be modified safely.
Besides, you modify an attic stair when you install it, ie cutting it to size.
I am thinking of a dovetail sliding extension
but still seeking ideas.
