Trapped??

I think it might be because the air flow for the fire is drawing air from the house and that is (if not trapped in the drains with standing water) is causing the septic smell to reenter the house. Make sure all of your drains have traps on them and that they have water in the traps.

Also, try building a fire, but leave a window or door slightly open to see if you still get the same smell.
