broken door knob

The doorknob on my front door is broken. I can remove the doorknob, but the bolt that slides into the doorframe is jammed. I am not able to remove the door by removing the hindges. Is there any way to unjam the bolt? Do I have to drill it out, or will that make the problem worse?
