A heating system is looked upon as one object, like a picture or a car. However, the word 'system' implies a group of interdependent entities combining for a purpose. A geothermal system is a heat pump, which requires the best techs available, combined with well technology and air or radiant floor distribution systems for a 5500 sq ft house. This means at least two such 'systems' to heat a house of that size. As geothermal units for smaller homes are often $15,000 - two of them could be twice that. Add in the radiant floor option for another $10,000, and you make quite an investment to be trusted to the skills of a repairman. Amortise that to save $1000 a year and you can get old in the attempt.
Geothermal from a volcano that gives free heat from piping alone could be feasable; but then living in a caldera can have its up times. Electric heat pumps operate inexpensively with heat at 1/4th the electric rates for baseboard electric (which are usually three times oil or gas); but can be a nightmare when they go bad.
