Henry, I also have that five speed bench top drill press, the one that you change the speeds by moving the belt up or down the pullys. Mine works well. I also have a $15 electric grinder that works well, it just eats those spring motor things.
Your philosophy is right on with me. Stay away from precision tools or tools that you would use day on.
