I am puttimg a disclaimer on this, but asbestos siding is pretty much safe to work with, the danger is messing around with the loose fiber kind. I live in the west coast and they don't oppose it but N.Y. can be very nasty about doing the work yourself. Check with your AHJ. I am not being a prophet of doom, yes you can doit yourself but check on the regulations in your state.
