Steve is probably right, but another possibility may be that air currents developed around the upstairs bathtub/shower because of poor insulating to the attic may be causing dust/dirt shadows on the ceiling. Either way Steve's solution should work. If the tub/shower area feels cold in the winter, suspect an insulating problem.
