Thought I'd post my trials and successes after looking for answers at this site.
I removed old carpet that was taped down to an older hardwood floor. I didn't want to use super strong adhesive remover because I wasn't wanting to refinish at this time. Just get the tape and sticky residue up. Tried different products, including Goo Gone and other glue removers, mineral spirits, vinegar, etc. Ended up using a hair dryer and the tape just lifted right off the floor!! Then I used Goo Gone to remove the residue. Scrubbed with vinegar/water mix and it looks great!
