Removing a border adhesive from a painted wall

I applied a border by mistake to a painted wall using a border adhesive instead of wallpaper paste, I have come to remove it & have managed to get the top layer off but the backing has stuck on like glue & refuses to be removed, I have tried allsorts to remove it from scraping, to chemicals like white spirit, apart from sanding the wall, does anyone know of an adhesive remover that could do the job? Any help would be much appreciated as I am at the get it replastered stage..
