i used the heatgun and simply got the tar and paper off and put into a metal can. Then i followed up with a sharp richards scraper to get it right to the wood. I used a belt sander to sharpen my scraper every so often. Good results yet it is timely. hmmm i'd imagine a bigger heatgun would speed up the process perhaps a fancy space heater mounted to a dolly lol!!!
