remote controlled ceiling fan

I am trying to install a ceiling fan with a remote control. There does not appear to be enough space for the remote and all of the wires. Any suggestions? In addition, from the ceiling there are four wires: white, black, red and a ground.

From the one side of the remote are three wires: black, white and blue.

From the other side of the remote are two wires: black and white.

I connected the black from one side of the remote to the black from the ceiling and the white from one side of the remote to the white from the ceiling.

From ceiling fan to remote: white to white, black to black and blue, blue and red.

With this connection, the light worked but the fan did not.

After reading some comments on regarding this matter, I capped off the red and tucked it in the ceiling. Now nothing works. Any suggestions?
