You can no clue as to the model number or age so I can only give you generic information.

Chamberlain makes the Sears units and most parts are the same.


Here it contains some diagnostic information.

When you have the cover off check for any problem with the gears that would cause it to bind.

One thing that they don't mention is the capactor.

If the capacitor is bad the motor would not run and would hum.

Note your unit might have a different capacitor depending on the motor.
