cheviot faucet

Hello, I just bought a cheviot faucet and shower conversion for my clawfoot tub. Intially I was really impressed with this product, but after the first use I have a problem with the shower. I can't believe that after you turn the water off shower off that the water doesn't drain back down the pipe to the faucet. Instead it drains out of the shower head and splashes all over the front of the tub. Is this common with this type of shower head and facuet arrangement? Is there anything that can be done to remedy this problem. Thanks in advance.
