I would agree with you that you have to drain the shower riser... however with this model it seems that the diverter is either shower or tub. I took it apart and there is a plunger with an o ring on either end and when you adjust it to shower the faucet is closed off and when you adjust it to the faucet, the shower is closed off and the riser won't drain.

I was wondering if I took the top o ring off if the shower would drain ???
