There might be a key vent at the top side of the radiator. If you don't have a key to open the vent to get rid of the air, they are usually available at a hardware store or sent from an internet on-line order. Radiators in those old systems are air traps, so need that occasionally. It is also time to find out if the water is up to the top of the system so air won't get in. Follow the steps for standing radiator air purging here:

Yes, you really have to find out the MAKE and MODEL to get good answers. There IS more than one machine made.
