New Bathtub Leaks when full not during shower

I think I might know the answer to this one but I need to be really sure I'm on the right track. I think that the problem is that the drain wasn't assembled correctly so that during a shower the leak has been unnoticeable but the weight of the full tub of water puts stress on the drain seal and causes the water to flood the room below.

Should I try removing the drain assembly, apply a gasket or putty and then try reseating it?

That's all I could come up with since we just installed the tub about a month ago.

I'd appreciate some professional advice.
