you got the wires mixed up.the reason i say is if the little light in the switch comes on then that means that there is a complete circuit somwhere. if you have a switch like that on one bulb and if the bulb burns out then the tiny light will not come on.so the switch is connected to something else.the fan?and the circuit running to the lights are open somehow.
