You need to take the bottom window out. Look and you will see a narrow piece of moulding holding it in place. Pry off this moulding and you can remove the window. When you put window back, just toss the old moulding and replace it with new. The moulding is cheap and easy to work with. Take a sample to the building supply and get something similar. Of course now you gotta paint.
On each side of the panel you have removed, there is a thin gauge metal strip several inches long. The strip is bowed out from the wood frame containing the glass. You can increase the bow of the metal with your hand. This will effectively increase the tension and thereby the friction of the sliding window as it moves up and down within its groove.
You will have to experiment with different bends on each window. Its not an exact science, but quite simple.
There is a trade-off: The better the window stays up, the harder it is to push and pull up and down.
Be careful when you put the moulding back on. Don't snug it up too close or you won't be able to move the window up and down. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
