Recently our 1/2 HP Craftsman garage door opener will sound as if it is running when we try to open the garage door"

"There is a humming sound from the opener but the chain does not rotate."

A humming sound is much different from "sounds like it is runing".

Either something is broken or loose so that power is not being transmited from the motor to the chain.

Or something is broken so that the motor is misaligned.

Or the motor starter capacitor is bad.

What is the model number of the opener?

About how old is it?

Does it stop on it's own?

Remove the cover and watch the mechanism.
