old leak

After repairing an old roof leak I now have a small hole in my living room ceiling,with a raised up line 1 1/2 feet long. The ceiling is drywall, but has a rough finish spackle I think. I want to smooth it down without taking down the whole thing, then respackle and paint the whole think. Any hints?
