A ceiling box with a single cable with red, black, and white is setup so that a ceiling fan can be installed with independent control of the fan and light.

In some house two seperate switches are installed.

In others a single switch is installed and it get replaced with a combination fan and light control.

But if you have a fan with remote control you don't need the fan controls switch.

You will have to look at the switch and see if it wired to the black or the red.
