What kind of ceiling is this? (Need help...)

In our new home there is recessed ceiling with custom trim and dropped flourescent diffuser panels. If you can click a link see below. Basically its a grid of trim about 8 inches from the ceiling proper with (I think) 2 x 4 acrylic panels diffusing light from 2 to 4 flourescent light fixtures. My first though was to take out the fixtures and put in cove lighting and recessed can lights. (leaving some of the trim). But, I've now seen one or two photos with this type of lighting and a different type of diffuser giving it an almos natural - sunny day feeling. I would love that - as the biggest turn off here is the stark lighting makes the glaring white counter-tops look so --- well - steril? Any help? I'm trying to find design tips and some keywords I can search on to see photos of other kitchens with this type of ceiling - thanks!
