Installing a shower, where there is a window.

My house was built in the early 50's, there is a window over the tub area and I am ready to install a hand held shower. How can I keep the nice large woodwork around the window and use the shower, also.
I am having an exhaust fan installed, ducted outside. I am thinking of a rectangular shower rod, any comments?
Or maybe use a plastic curtain to protect the window, which I think is not cool.
Please help.
