I agree with Jay on his second option. I would identify the studs with a finder and mark the ceiling. Then get some 1/4 inch rock and re hang the entire room. You will get a new set of walls, all your problems are behind you. but, as Jay stated, get a person that has experience with tape and bed work for the job. As Jay stated, a good tape man/woman will leave you with unseen seams.
