Remodeling/room addition

We are attempting to add on to our family room. The questions is what is the most economic way to go? Four different contractors and four different opionions.

We want to add 10 ft to the existing room. The house was built in 1959 and the problem is the fireplace, do we recondition it and add a functional gas insert (actually heats the home) or would tearing down the old fireplace and framing in a new gas model in the corner be the most cost effective.

For some reason there are four different ways of doing the same thing and we are confused, HELP!
