I am by no means a professional, but here's what worked for me. I used a heat gun to warm up the areas, then scraped the glue off with a 4in. paint & wall scraper. It was most effective when I changed the blades frequently (which you can buy a pack of 5 for about $3). It did the job so I can put down tile, but it did take quite a bit of time.
