I perfer the stone look vs formica or corion.
But its cold granite marble or what every is cold.
try this I've done one job like this and has been wonderful:
Poured concrete with color and stain, with radient floor heat in it.
Not much tubing but enough to keep the counter warm.
You could also put small section with electric element for warming "plate"
