I have recently dismanteled my canterlevered deck. The floor joists supporting the deck extend about 5 feet. There are 28 joists 16in on center. I intend to extend a new deck out to 16 feet. My question is should I saw off the old joists and attach the new ledger to the end grain of the existing floor joists, (i'm afraid of the joists splitting)or should I saw off the old joists leaving enough to attach hangers/connectors . I have looked at home centers for ideas but can't seem to find hangers to match this application.
