refinishing Sears french provincial-syle girl's bedroom furniture

Help! I have a 40-50 year-old desk, hutch and dresser that I used when I was a kid, and my one daughter also used. It is a mess! Perhaps a year ago I saw a TV program on turning this ugly stuff into a truly stunning bedroom set. Dark stain/paint, faux gold leaf, etc., to replace the original white finish (looks like laminate) with accompanying gold edging. I have NO idea what progran, network, craftsperson first presented. Can you help? The finish is ugly, but that good 'ole Sears furniture sure lasts!
