Finding studs in walls!

We are remodeling one of our bedrooms and are in the process of nailing the
baseboard back up. We live in an older
style brick house. We nailed the baseboard back up in inner walls with
no problem but now we are trying to find the studs so that we can nail the baseboard to the exterior walls. The walls appear to be plaster with brick behind them (no lath). Whenever I drill
to find a stud I hit brick. I tried
a stud finder (no luck). I tried tapping
on the wall but the studs and the brick
appear to right against the wall.

any suggestions?
