garage door problems

Maybe someone can help me. I am a sinlge parent and determined to fix this myself. I get such joy when I figure some stuff out that I depended on a husband to do. I really am trying to avoid a great service fee by having to call some handy man to take a look. My garage door will not open. When we puch the openner on either the wall or the openner we carry in car you hear the motor but the pully chain guess whats that is called won't move, it is the one that looks like the bike chain? What is the problem, do I need whole new system?
