First you need to disconnect the opener from the door and manually open the door. You should be able to open it 1/2 way and the door stay there. Open it 3/4 and it should continue up. Open it 1/4 and it should go back down. If not the springs are broken and mis adjusted. That is not a DIY job. After that you need to look at the opener. You did not give a make and model number. The older Liftmaster/Chamberlain/Sears using have a belt and pully drive. The the pully setscrew can come loose or belt broken.
