Have an electrician install electric baseboard heaters. Electric heat is expensive; but as the less expensive heat in the attic provides most of the heat, the supplemental electric heaters wouldn't be that much more costly to run (and you'd have backup heat for mom if the upstairs heater ever has a problem.)

Yes, you really have to find out the MAKE and MODEL to get good answers. There IS more than one machine made.
