How to remove a fireplace?

I have an extra fireplace. I want to remove it but don't know to what extent it is "in" the wall. There is (of course) the recessed area of the burning area... the mantle, hearth & "frame" are all gray stones. I don't even know whether they are real.
The burning area is enclosed by folding glass doors & a vented area above the door.
I don't care to remove the "guts" of the fireplace -- I want to make the wall smooth so that I can mount a tv/speakers and recover some space in the room.

My guess/hope is that the stones & all are simply imitation/surface-mounted and can be removed fairly easily.

do you have information or suggestions for me?
