remove fireplace revisited

I thought of that, too, but there are 2 windows in the wall and a built-in shelf/cabinet unit on the adjacent wall.
I guess what I'm really asking is "how was/is a fireplace built in the 1st place?" With that knowledge, I should know how to proceed. This home was built in 1989 in the San Francisco Bay Area (guessing that will help with building codes, etc)

The best bet (IMHO) is to remove the mantle, hearth & surrounding decorative stone. I'm just concerned as to whether those are built into the wall or surface-mounted.
Removing all that would be step 1
Step 2 would be to determine whether to remove the doors & vent plate (probably?) to close the hole or whether they are set back far enough to simply put a plywood cover over the front, tape it in & re-surface.


Also, since I'm not removing the fireplace structure or chimney, do I need to concern myself with building codes/permits?
